María Martorell

María Martorell was born in the city of Salta, where she began her painting studies in 1942 in the studio of painter Ernesto M. Scotti, continuing under his direction until 1946.

 

In mid-1952, she traveled to Spain, settling in Madrid until the end of 1953. She worked in the open studio of the Fine Arts Association of Madrid and at the Museum of the Academy of San Fernando. She then traveled through Italy, France, Germany, Holland, England, and Switzerland.

 

In 1954, she moved to Paris, where she remained until the end of 1956. She attended the Sociology of Art course taught by Professor Pierre Francastel at the École Pratique des Hautes Études. Between 1961 and 1980, she traveled through Colombia, Venezuela, Mexico, and the United States, where she held exhibitions.

 

She received awards and mentions for her works in important salons in Argentina and worldwide. Additionally, she was named an Illustrious Citizen of the city of Salta and Academic Delegate for Salta by the National Academy of Fine Arts of Argentina.

 

She died in Salta, Argentina, on July 26, 2010, at the age of 101.
